Pausing city deals funding ‘unacceptable and deplorable’ – O’Neill

On the 23rd of October, 2023, the UK Government paused funding for city and growth deals in Northern Ireland during a spending review, affecting £1.7 billion in deals for Belfast, Londonderry, Strabane, Causeway Coast, and Mid South West.

First Minister Michelle O’Neill condemned the decision as “unacceptable and deplorable,” citing the deals as critical for urban regeneration and job creation. Deputy First Minister Emma Little-Pengelly and Finance Minister Caoimhe Archibald criticized the move, calling it bad faith, particularly as the Derry and Strabane deal was to be signed next week.
